Buckling transition of a semiflexible filament in extensional flow.

چکیده
An analytical expression for the fluctuation-rounded stretch-coil transition of semiflexible polymers in extensional flows is derived. The competition between elasticity and tension is known to cause a buckling instability in filaments placed near hyperbolic stagnation points and the effect of thermal fluctuations on this transition has yet to receive full quantitative treatment. Motivated by the findings of recent experiments as well as our simulations, we solve for the amplitude of the first buckled mode near the onset of the instability. This reveals a stochastic supercritical bifurcation, which is in excellent agreement with full numerical simulations.

Buckling of semiflexible filaments under compression
A model for filament buckling at finite temperatures is presented. Starting from the classical worm-like chain model under constant compression, we use a mean-field approach for filament inextensibility to find the complete partition function. We find that there is a simple interpolation formula that describes the free energy of chains or filaments as a function of end-to-end separation, which ...

Semiflexible polymers subject to hydrodynamic forcing play an important role in cytoskeletal motions in the cell, particularly when filaments guide molecular motors whose motions create flows. Near hyperbolic stagnation points, filaments experience a competition between bending elasticity and tension and are predicted to display suppressed thermal fluctuations in the extensional regime and a bu...
متن کاملFlow-induced helical coiling of semiflexible polymers in structured microchannels.
The conformations of semiflexible (bio)polymers are studied in flow-through geometrically structured microchannels. Using mesoscale hydrodynamics simulations, we show that the polymer undergoes a rod-to-helix transition as it moves from the narrow high-velocity region into the wide low-velocity region of the channel. The transient helix formation is the result of a nonequilibrium and nonstation...
متن کاملTheory of Semiflexible Filaments and Networks
We briefly review the recent developments in the theory of individual semiflexible filaments, and of a crosslinked network of such filaments, both permanent and transient. Starting from the free energy of an individual semiflexible chain, models on its force-extension relation and other mechanical properties such as Euler buckling are discussed. For a permanently crosslinked network of filament...
متن کاملBuckling a Semiflexible Polymer Chain under Compression
Instability and structural transitions arise in many important problems involving dynamics at molecular length scales. Buckling of an elastic rod under a compressive load offers a useful general picture of such a transition. However, the existing theoretical description of buckling is applicable in the load response of macroscopic structures, only when fluctuations can be neglected, whereas mem...
